Operation Lone Star returns next week bringing free health care services to five sites in South Texas. People can get student physicals, hearing and vision screenings, child immunizations and other health screenings. For the first time, eye exams for prescription glasses will be offered at two locations. Dental care will be available at three sites.

Operation Lone Star, an annual event first staged in 1999, also provides an opportunity to train emergency responders in how to quickly set up and operate clinics in the event of a public health emergency. The clinics are a cooperative effort of DSHS and other state health and human services agencies, Cameron County Department of Health and Human Services, Hidalgo County Health and Human Services, City of Laredo Health Department, Texas Military Forces, Remote Area Medical Volunteer Corps and community volunteer groups.

Basic dental care for school-age children will be provided at the Ringgold Middle School site in Rio Grande City. Dental services and eye exams for adults and children will be available at Manzano Middle School in Brownsville and Palmview High School in Mission. All clinics will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. For more information, call your local health department or dial 2-1-1.
