How to Apply
Interested applicants must use the Electronic Residency Application Service and submit completed applications by November 15th to receive full consideration. Our program will be participating in the Standardized Acceptance Process.
General Requirements of All Applicants
- Only applications received through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) will be considered, with no exceptions.
- Completed applications (including all required documents) must be submitted by November 15th of each year for full consideration of entry into the program on July 1st of the following year.
- Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship. Letters of recommendation must be submitted from the author, must be dated, and must not be more than two years old.
- A letter of recommendation must be written by the program director at each residency program you have participated in and must not be more than two years old.
- Applicants with more than three attempts on any step of the USMLE will not be considered as they cannot be licensed in Texas.
- Our program begins in the PGY-2 year. Every applicant must successfully complete a clinical PGY-1 year with at least 11 months of direct patient care in the inpatient or outpatient setting at an ACGME-accredited program within the United States before entering our program.
- Every applicant without a PGY-1 experience as noted above needs to apply simultaneously for a transitional or preliminary year residency program.
Graduates of Accredited U.S. Medical Schools (MD or DO)
- You must apply through your school via the ERAS system, with no exceptions.
- Your applications must include curriculum vitae, 3 letters of recommendation, a transcript, dean's letters, USMLE test scores or COMLEX scores, and a personal statement.
- You must have successfully completed Step 1 and Step 2 CK and CS.
- Although we do not have set minimum USMLE requirements, the overall score and the number of attempts needed to pass each step will be taken into consideration.
Graduates of Foreign Medical Schools
- You must apply through ERAS. No emailed or faxed applications will be accepted, with no exceptions.
- You must be ECFMG certified at the time of application and possess a valid certificate.
- Your application must include curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation, a medical school transcript, dean's letters, USMLE test scores or COMLEX scores, and a personal statement.
- You must have successfully completed the USMLE Step 1, USMLE Step 2 CK, and the USMLE Step 2 CS exams.
- Although we do not have set minimum USMLE requirements, the overall score and the number of attempts needed to pass each step will be taken into consideration.
- Applicants who graduated more than 3 years ago are rarely considered for an interview unless they have been actively practicing medicine (not observerships or research) and are fully licensed.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
- Your school must be listed on the Texas Medical Board's list of Medical Schools with "substantial equivalence".
Applicant Requirements
Requirements for Resident Physician Appointment
- Graduate from an accredited program leading to an MD or DO degree
- Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada must meet the following qualifications:
- A valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates before appointment; and
- A full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in Texas.
- Complete one year of clinical training (PGY-1) in an ACGME-accredited clinical year (12 months) with a minimum of 11 months of direct patient care in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
- An active Physician in Training permit (PIT) or an active license from the Texas Medical Board. Residents must obtain licensure before the Residency program’s start date (July 1).
- Acceptance into the residency program is contingent upon possession of an MPH or equivalent degree, or admission into an MPH program at a University of Texas School of Public Health. Applicants with an MPH degree must submit transcripts as part of the application and by the application deadline. Applicants without an MPH must show proof of admission into the Texas program of choice before the start date (July 1).
Foreign medical graduates must present a valid certificate from the Educational Council on Foreign Medical Graduates and a certificate of successful completion of the USMLE exams.
Appointment Process
Residents must successfully complete the credentialing process before entering as a resident. Entry into the program is contingent on completing the following items. All items must be completed 30 days before the planned start date. Failure to complete the credentialing process may result in loss of residency position.
- Acquire an active Physician in Training permit (PIT) or an active license from the Texas Medical Board.
- Possession of an MPH or equivalent degree and submission of an official transcript or proof of admission into an MPH program at a Texas School of Public Health.
- A letter from the program director at the transitional or preliminary program that indicates you successfully met the ACGME requirements, completed 11 months of direct patient care, and are eligible for advancement in the program.
- Complete an online DSHS application for employment.
- Foreign medical graduates must submit a valid certificate from the Educational Council on Foreign Medical Graduates and a certificate of successful completion of the USMLE exams.
